1) Vaccinations and medications: A yellow fever vaccination is required for
this course. Other vaccinations and prophylaxis will be recommended by a
health-care provider. Typically students take anti-malarial prophylaxis.
Depending on your insurance, medications typically require between $50 and
$250.
2) Tips: There are two required tips (we recommend a minimum of $30 each) for
the guides at Sacha Lodge and in the Galapagos Islands.
3) Departure Tax: This tax is collected when you check in for the departure flight from Quito.
4) Personal Expenditures: Extra food, snacks, and beverages are not included. Gifts
and any personal items are not included.
5) Passports and Visas: Travel to Ecuador requires, at a minimum, a valid passport. Visas to
Ecuador are not required for citizens of the United States. Citizens of other countries may need
to obtain a visa. Passports and visas are the responsibility of each student.
COST: Keeping the price of this course as low as possible is a major concern of ours: we have made
every effort to keep costs down.
Nonetheless, this is an expensive trip. With respect to commerically available tours with
the same features (rain forest, highlands, Galapagos), the cost of the course is in the low to medium
range.
In addition, you will hear scientific and cultural lectures from Ecuadorian experts/professors, and also have
opportunity to interact with Johns Hopkins faculty.
